There are a TON of different paths you could take when helping someone with Asperger’s. Where do you start? What will be most effective? What should you avoid?
If you are confused about how to actually get started, this article is for you.
Everything we do at Asperger Experts is based on personal, real-world experience living with Asperger’s every single day. Unlike the doctors, we don’t get to turn it off at the end of the day. So that means finding real solutions that work for our lives, as well as the lives of our customers and clients.
Over the years, we’ve developed the AE Process which guides people with Asperger’s and their families on how to improve life with Asperger’s.
It looks like this:
For most though, the AE Process can still seem overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you focus on?
The answer lies here: Stop fighting. Take a look at where you are, and then move from there. We call this “acceptance”.
A lot of people will focus on surface level situational things, like “How do I get my son to be motivated?”, or “How do I finally get them to take a shower?”
The surface level questions are important. We have to start at the beginning though. The beginning relates more to the root causes of behavior. When you focus on the right areas, it looks like this:
You start with Acceptance. Then you move onto Getting out of Defense Mode, Aligning your Influence Circles, learning how to Hold The Space, and establishing good skills in setting expectations and effective communication.
Essentially, 80% of your energy should be in the grey, orange and blue sections of the diagram. Focus on those areas and things will begin to change for the better.
As needed, go toward the outside of the circle to get help on specific issues (like video game addictions).
Where a lot of people go wrong is spending 99% of their time, energy, and money focusing on the outer section of the circle. These are those situational questions. They are always in reactive mode, chasing situations, getting burnt out from constantly putting out fires, then needing another boost of hope to continue.
Instead, focus inward. Focus on working on what you can control (yourself), and the results you’ve longed for will begin to show up.
