The 3 Parts To The Foundations Of Communication Course

Part 1: Create A Shared Culture

Communication comes from the latin root communis, meaning "To make common"... and yet, a large portion of our communication today is not common at all. When you tell your child to clean their room, is your version of clean theirs?

Part 1 is all about creating a shared culture: That means a shared language, shared values & shared expectations. Once you have a solid & common base of information, actual communication becomes much easier.

In other words, for example, after implementing the processes in this step, when you say "Clean your room" your kid will know EXACTLY what you mean.

Some of what you'll learn in Part 1...

  • Speaking the same language: How to co-create a shared language so that misunderstandings become a thing of the past
  • Shared expectations: Avoiding conflict by co-creating shared expectations AHEAD of time
  • Shared values: Do you value the same things that they do? And how do you find out?
  • The Weekly Meeting: How to get buy-in, adjust when necessary, and collaboratively problem solve with the entire family

Part 2: Listening & Understand

There's a saying that goes "Before you can move someone from point A to point B, they first need to feel completely heard & understood at point A." In this section, you'll learn the essential skill of listening to understand someone's thoughts, point of view, emotions, and feelings.

Once you validate how another person feels, THEN (and only then) will they be open to further dialogue, suggestion, and communication.

Some of what you'll learn in Part 2...

  • Listening isn't the same as hearing: How to practice "Deep Listening" so someone with Asperger's feels heard & validated
  • When it gets uncomfortable: How to resolve uncomfortable feelings by "Being with it"
  • Different types of listening: When do you use each?

Part 3: Communicate Effectively

Communication is a lot more than what you say. It involves how you say it (vocal tone & body language), when you say it, and how receptive another person is at the time of the conversation.

This is the section where we discuss how to talk to people with Asperger's, start conversations and get buy in for important things that need to be discussed.

Some of what you'll learn in Part 3...

  • 3 Communication Voices: Mr. Rogers, Presidential, & General Patton (and when to use each)
  • Step-by-step instructions for starting a conversation in a way that helps the other person truly hear & internalize your words
  • What to say in difficult conversations, and how to diffuse when it gets into extreme or violent territory
  • What to say so they listen the first time (and you don't have to repeat yourself)
